Why your training needs exercise variety

“I’m working so hard but I’m not seeing any progress!”

Does this sound like you, or someone you know? Have you ever worked out on your own and gotten tired of doing the same exercises over and over? Did you feel like your progress slowed, or even stopped?

Why does that happen?!

Doing the same movement patterns continuously will show results initially. You may see an increase in strength, or slightly bigger muscles. However, over the span of about 4-6 weeks, your body becomes accustomed to those movements. The stressors that your muscles need in order to grow are no longer being met.

By including a variety of exercises when working out, you constantly create new stimuli and promote continuous changes and growth. You’ll notice that our workouts change from day to day, and from week to week. While this helps us avoid plateauing in our training, it also keeps our workouts exciting! Nobody wants to do the same workouts over and over!

If you track your workouts in a software system like Wodify, Chalk it Pro, SugarWOD, etc, you will find that your strength and speed increases over time!

Finally, including a variety of exercises helps to prevent overtraining. Allowing muscles to rest in between training days gives them a chance to recover and be fresh for the next session. We can accomplish this recovery by alternating upper body and lower body exercise days or targeting different muscle groups on different days.

Take a look at the workouts you’re doing this week. Do yours have a variety, while also maintaining structure, excitement, and proper recovery? If not, we’d love to help you build a well-rounded training program.
